What Is TMS?

TMS stands for Tension Myocitis Syndrome and is yet another chronic pain disorder. The difference in this condition is that it is pain that is caused because of psychological problems. Im not saying that it is because you are crazy, not at all. But it is pain that is caused because of underlying issues that are not being dealt with.

The brain creates pain in the body to create a distraction from what the problems are that you are not dealing with. So if your doctor can find no physical reason for your pain and basically says that it is all in your head. thats the truth!
Its not a bad thing to admit to this; in fact it is great to know that it isnt something really wrong with you. But just like Fibromyalgia, the pain is REAL to the one experiencing it.

Dr. John Sarno has written a wonderful book on this and I highly recommend it. Its called Healing Back Pain. Now of course its not always back or neck pain that is experienced. This problem can cause a multitude of problems even chest pain, due to tendons and muscles tightening up so much they pinch off nerves. What happens here is something called oxygen- depravation. There is not enough oxygen getting to the muscles. On physical examination the tendon reflexes and muscle strength are tested to determine whether oxygen- deprivation has irritated the nerve sufficiently to interfere with the transmission of motor impulses.

When patients are first seen, they are under the impression that they have been suffering from the long-term results of an injury, a degenerative process, a congenital abnormality or some deficiency in the strength or flexibility of their muscles. The idea of injury would seem the most obvious. This often ties in with the circumstances of when the pain begins. Many times the circumstances are very minute and the patient is not really injured, but the physical occurrence has given the BRAIN the opportunity to begin an attack of TMS.

Invariably those patients who have a gradual onset of pain will attribute it to a physical incident that may have occurred year before, like a car accident or skiing accident. Because in their minds back pain is physical, that is, structural, it must be due to an injury. As far as they are concerned there has to be a physical cause. This idea is one of the great impediments in the way of recovery. It must be resolved in the patients mind or the pain will persist.

Gradually patient's need to begin to think psychologically; and once the diagnosis of TMS is made, it is common for patients to begin to recall all of the psychological things that where going on in their lives when the acute attacks occurred, like the starting of a new job, getting married, a divorce, illness or death in the family, financial difficulties and so on. Or the patients will acknowledge that he or she had always been a worrier, over conscientious and responsible, compulsive and a perfectionist. This is the beginning of the start of the process of putting things into proper perspective. It is the recognition that there are physical disorders that play a psychological role in human biology.

Dr. Sarno uses positive affirmations to help change the programming in the subconscious mind. It was interesting that one of my clients gave me the book because he thought that what Dr. Sarno does in his book is so similar to what I do with my clients. To my surprise, I found that TMS is the condition that my husband has been suffering from for many years. He has finally been able to get more control of his pain issues as I have made tapes for him to change the program in his brain that gives him the pain all the time.

With the help of hypnosis, you can learn the mind/body connection and make tremendous changes in your physical and emotional programming.
